- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2013I have been looking for a helmet camera for quite some time to use while I've been playing polo. I looked at the go pro cameras for quite some time, however, the current models that I came across on Amazon.com the hero3 very dismal reviews at just a little over three stars. I initially saw the JVC camera at Best Buy while shopping and I came home and looked on Amazon to find more information. Once my camera arrived it was surprisingly easy to attach to my polo helmet using the gogole attachment. I use the chinstrap that goes over the top of my helmet to afix the goggle attachment to. If you'll intend to use this camera for your polo helmet and you have a polo helmet that is covered in fabric the 3M double-sided tape that comes with the standard helmet mount will not adhere to Fabric-this is why I needed to use the goggle mount and attach it to the chinstrap that goes over the top of the brim of the helmet. Once I mounted the camera to my helmet using the goggle attachment it was very secure very stable I did not feel any wobbling or wiggling or anything out of the ordinary at all while I was riding my horse.
The video I shot while and balling with my pony came out very crisp and very clear with exceptional audio quality. You can pick up a conversation easily that I'm having with someone who is standing about 50 yards away from me. There was a bit of wind noise once I started to trot on my horse however I was already aware of this from the numerous videos I watched shot from the JVC camera that pointed this out there is an easy fix where you can put a bit of headphone foam over the speaker with a little bit of electrical tape to remedy this issue.
The camera comes with several different types of instructions, included in the packaging is a poster sized foldout in many different languages that gives you basic instructions on how to connect the camera to your computer using Wi-Fi, to your cell phone using Wi-Fi and to a Wi-Fi network in general. These instructions are not particularly detailed. Once you connect your camera to your computer using the provided USB cable you can find a PDF guide and you can select your language and it has 45 pages of very detailed English introductions that I found much more helpful than the printed foldout. The PDF guy is actually saved to the device memory and you can save a copy on your computer's hard drive, I actually emailed a copy to my iPad so I could open it in iBooks and some through it like a book while working with the camera.
The only difficult time I had with the camera was trying to get the video off using the Wi-Fi function. I tried to connect to my cell phone and pull the video off using the wi video application however it would take a lot of time and eventually the camera would say that that transfer had failed.
This also happened when I tried to upload my video directly to YouTube from the camera, I had no problem whatsoever connecting to my YouTube account and setting up the account on the camera using the provided Windows-based software however, anytime I tried upload to YouTube directly the progress bar on the camera LCD would freeze at a certain point and then fail.
Once you read the instructions it's very easy to connect the camera to your mobile phone so you use your phone as a remote and can preview how the shot is going to look, however, even with a provided instructions that are very detailed in the PDF file it is really difficult to try to upload the video from the camera using Wi-Fi. In fact, it's not really difficult it's just that the connection seems to die or the upload seems to fail for various reasons. I'm going to try it again with my battery fully charged though at a later time. I ended up Just connecting the camera using the provided USB cable to my MacBook and importing the video to my hard drive using iMovie-this took about 30 minutes because I shot him about a gigabyte of data which equated to about 10 minutes of footage and it took a while but it came out nicely once it's uploaded. The first time I attempted to upload the software, however, I attempted to just click and drag the video I shot from the camera folder to my desktop and for some reason when I play the video back in QuickTime it was very very choppy and looked horrible I was almost worried something was wrong with the camera. However, when I did the longer import using QuickTime it came out Perfectly just the way that it was displaying on the camera. I believe this has something to do with the compression rate that QuickTime was using versus iMovie. In iMovie I was able to compress video slightly instead of trying to display it on my MacBook at the full I believe 1920 HD.
My biggest reason for buying this device was the attractive pricing I saw at around $199, although I was able to get it off Amazon for
169, and the fact that it automatically is waterproof and shockproof and has Wi-Fi and an LCD. The hero 3 that I looked that had a starting price point of about $299 plus you have to buy additional accessories for all of the features that I mentioned previously that come standard on the JVC camera. This is very comforting considering that the reviews I read regarding the go Pro hero 3 were mediocre at best regarding the functionality of the camera in general and it shutting off at random and having to buy all additional things. I am very very pleased with this camera.
In addition to using it while I'm riding my horse and playing polo I look forward to using it in the pool over the summer and while
snowboarding this season as well as riding my mountain bike driving my car and playing paintball.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2014Well... Excellent in terms of built what probably satisfy most of those who buy this camera as well as in terms of ease to use since the menus are simple, easy to surf through and to understand.
The main drawback is related to options of installation of the camera. In reality there are given just two of them - on the dash board in your car or on the tripod. It should be nice if there were more opportunities given such as to attach it to the rubber band for putting the camera onto your head or arm or onto your [camera]bag etc... The Bullet guys were more creative in this case I have to admit though the quality of recorded video of JVC is definitely much better!
The process of recording itself is very easy and the quality of the video itself is very good indeed! It brings a crisp and very sharp picture with no blur or pixelation. Not that good to use under low light conditions, but reasonably good anyway!
As a photographer I'd wish to see a screw-on ND filter what could make the picture more enjoyable while filming under the bright sun. I think it is not a rocket science to make it real!
One more recommendation to creators of this device is related to spare battery and charger what should come together with camera. It could bring more freedom to users. Again - not a rocket science!
So despite of the drawbacks I mentioned above I highly recommend this camera to everyone who is interested in video filming on amateur level!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2012I've had this camera for one month and I'm returning it. I have a detailed video review with sample footage out on Youtube which unfortunately is way too long for Amazon's restrictions, but you should be able to find it if you search for: "w469o3CkiCw" or "JVC Adixxion Action Camera Review GC-XA1".
Brief summary: The video isn't as good as I'd like. Up close, it's crisp and clear but anything distant is fuzzy as is anything in motion. The audio is downright horrible if you are moving fast enough to generate any wind noise. I covered the microphone with a piece of tape and it helped a lot, but it's still not great. But the worst part is: the record button has begun to stick so I can't reliably record anything or do any menu setting.
What I can say good about it is:
1. The bottom and side 1/4-20 tripod mounts are a great feature!
2. The size is fantastic - really allows mounting almost anywhere.
3. The menus are easy to use.
4. Nice to have LCD screen.
5. Uses SD cards (not micro-SD cards)
6. Uses a standard USB cable.
7. There is a setting to invert the video if you mount it upside down.
8. Time lapse mode creates .mp4 movies (super! gopro creates a series of still images)
9. If you use the USB cable to connect to your computer, software to install Wifi is on the camera as is the full instruction manual!
10. Battery life is acceptable - well over 1 hour, maybe 2'ish?
11. Recharge time maybe 3-4 hours.
12. Records video in .mp4 format.
Some bad things and these are:
1. Video quality very soft, not sharp at all.
2. Audio horrible due to wind noise.
3. The Wifi was not easy to setup or use, but I did get it working on my PC, but not on my iPad, but I don't care about Wifi at all.
4. Durability very questionable as the record button has quit working.
5. Clear Plastic lens caps hard to remove, easy to lose.
6. Can't shut LCD screen off so time-lapse movies are limited without changing battery.
The camera would definitely be 10 stars if the video and audio quality equaled GoPro and if it hadn't broken because the everything else about from an ease of use perspective is exceptional.
I'm going to buy something else, trying to decide between GoPro HD Hero 2 and Contour+2.

5.0 out of 5 stars JVC Adixxion video camera, my son loves it !
Easy to use, great video , durable little video cam........ My son absolutely loves it ..... we considered the GoPro, but the high cost of accessories turned us off.......... this one comes with a lot of accessories, is water proof out of the box , and works with a lot of generic mounts and accessories that are easy and cheaper to find..... We compared with other action video cams, and this one offered the most for the best price........ no regrets on this at all..... We are really looking forward to trying it with water sports next summer..

4.0 out of 5 stars It was a gift, the person who received it, said like it very much.
The first 2 days testing it by riding bicycle, gave very good resaults. Sound and picture quality was not expected to be so good for such a small camera, but over all was satisfactory.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great on paper, wasted opportunity
This is a great camera, on paper. With integrated screen, waterproof without additional case, multiple tripod mount points on the bottom and side - it's a great concept. However, it's also a bit of a wasted opportunity, thanks to 2 major downfalls - software (firmware) and lack of mounting options.
There are some (somewhat) unexpected limitations, that are easily attributable to the firmware, and it's pretty frustrating, because there doesn't seem to be much reason for those.
1) The screen can't be turned off. While the screen is fantastic for framing your shots (especially when used on tripod) and for reviewing the footage, it also chews up the battery, so it severely limits any longer recording (Mine dies after about 70minutes, but by then the camera is pretty hot!). For an action camera that is supposed to be mounted mostly out of reasonable reach and the screen is not used, this is a major shortcoming.
2) You can use the camera when on external power supply (of course not waterproof anymore), but only for some modes. For example, you can shoot the 1s or 5s time-lapse (great feature btw), or the "endless recording" (which records 15min chunks and overwrites those once the memory is full) - however that is limited to 720p. You can't record regular video on external power - so in short, you have a great camera with 1080p (30fps) capability, but there's no way to record longer videos at fullHD, because the screen drains the battery, and there's no way to use external power for this...
3) the Wi-Fi connection, again a great feature on paper, is pretty finicky. On my first camera (that came with non-functioning memory slot and got promptly replaced by the seller) it actually worked ok... however, on the replacement, with upgraded firmware, it barely transfer files (very slow) but doesn't work as live camera/webcam...
The shape of the camera - essentially a miniature handycam - makes it somewhat awkward to use in "traditional" way of action cams. While mounted on top of the helmet, or on skis/boards or handlebars it probably works just fine, chest harness would be somewhat awkward. There is provided "goggle" mount which in theory makes a great use of the side tripod mount; I can see it working on ski goggles, but it's just too bulky for snorkelling/scuba diving. Besides it relies on tiny screws (provided, as is the screwdriver) which would makes any adjustment in field very tricky. I'd love to use this for scuba diving - you can actually get a proper dive case, which is quite inexpensive - but there's no good way to attach it to the goggles or anywhere else really... And if I'm holding a camera, I'd rather bring my proper digital camera that has a few more features. It's a wasted opportunity again, because the side mount just begs to be used on the side of the head where it's mostly out of the way but offers great perspective... So why bother with waterproofing camera and developing a dive case when these can't be used in straightforward manner??
In conclusion - this a great little action camera, and if you adjust your expectations, and find a decent sale, it can still be worth considering.
